# 1 - Iron-Up Your Hair
Just in case you are wondering, we are referring to iron-deficiency in your bloodstream that has a closer link to hair loss. You may want to add on tofu, spinach, beans, prunes and raisins into your daily diet. Avoid iron-supplements unless prescribed by doctor.
# 2 - Less Heat, Please !
Curling irons, hair straightener, and blow dryer can cause breakage due to excess heat. Reduce the frequency or set it at a lower heat setting. Well, it’s always best to stick to natural styling and bring on the all-night curlers !
# 3 - Let Your Hair Down or Go Home !
Hair styling can cause hair loss when braids or weaves are too tight. Try to keep your pony tails loose to reduce the amount of tension on the scalp.
# 4 - Comb This Way !
Many people use the wrong comb with brushing their hair right away after shower. It’s always best to opt for a wide tooth comb because it separates the strands without causing too much strain to the scalp while you detangle. Use the fine-tooth comb only when your hair is drier and untangled.
# 5 - Eat Your Avocados & Carrots !
Your hair can benefit from the increase consumption of protein, vitamins and minerals. Pack more lean meat, green vegetables and organic eggs, and appropriate supplements to achieve stronger and healthier looking hair.
# 6 - Biotin & Calcium Panthothenate, Please !
What are they? Biotin is a vitamin that is found in small amounts in numerous foods and one of the symptoms of Biotin deficiency is hair thinning. Calcium Panthothenate (vitamin B5) can help to increase scalp hydration and strengthens hair. Tricovel’s patented ingredient Biogenina® contains both Biotin and Calcium Panthonenate to help strengthen and nourish hair.

Whether or not you are losing hair, it’s important to follow these very important tips to keep your hair healthy and strong!

Healthy daily hair care regime can go a long way for your hair. It's not rocket science and it isn't too difficult as all you need to do is to develop good habits that will help you keep the hair you've always dreamed of.

# 1 - Wash your hair when needed.
There are so many mixed ideas on how often we should wash our hair. Everyday? Once in two days? Once a week? Don't wash at all? Firstly, determine your scalp type. The type of scalp you have is good enough to tell you when it's best to wash your hair.

Do you have oily scalp?
People with oily scalp would find their center T-zone a little oily by midday and the hair roots limp out when the day is over. Massage and wash your hair daily.

Do you have dry scalp?
People with dry scalp would usually have a somewhat drier skin on their skin and the hair is more susceptible to breakage. You may need to consider nourishing your hair with adding some oil into your routine and eating more foods with nutrients. You do not need to wash your hair daily, perhaps 2 or 3 times a week, with minimal amount of shampoo.

Do you have a normal scalp?
Lucky you! People with normal scalp would usually have no problems with skipping a day of shampoo. When you find that your hair needs a wash, maybe a little limp, just give your hair some wash. The strategy is to keep the scalp clean and hygiene is very essential.

Tip is to use shampoo that is suitable for your scalp type. Apply hair conditioner and hair mask to the roots of your hair when needed to keep hair smooth and away from tangles.

# 2 - Eat right.
As cliche as it sounds, eating right is completely necessary, not just for your health but hair too! A healthy, balanced diet that includes fruits, vegetables, and rich protein such as eggs, nuts and dairy products can help you to get healthier hair. It is also highly recommended that you add vitamins to your daily diet such as vitamin A. C. E, marine protein (Mireica), biotin or fish-oil to make your hair thicker and stronger.

# 3 - Head massage.
Head massages are the easiest and simplest hair care regime you can do for yourself anywhere at any time of the day! All you need is your fingertips, spread your fingers, place them on your forehead and press them gently in circular motion. Move on and press gently the top of your scalp and then the back of your scalp. Head massages are a great way to release tension and to stimulate blood circulation that encourages hair growth.

#4 - Reduce styling with heat & chemicals.
Imagine this. While your hair is trying to survive on your scalp, you stretch and apply chemicals on it to make it look good. Though it may look good (temporarily), it's ability to thrive is greatly affected. If you're already battling with hair loss, we highly suggest that you give your hair a little break and spend some time to nourish your body and hair before you begin styling your hair with chemicals. Practice healthy hair hygiene tips, such as keeping your scalp clean every day, apply treatments that gives your hair a healthy boosts of good nutrients,Tricovel, to keep your scalp healthy and stimulate healthy hair growth. Well, wouldn't you agree that with great volume comes great hair?

#5 - Brush/Comb your hair while it is.... dry.
One of the most common mistakes that people do is to comb their hair when it's wet. Our hair is most vulnerable when it is wet, therefore, only use a wide-tooth comb to comb while your hair is dry. If you are trying to untangle your hair, do apply a leave-on-conditioner to help you loosen up your tangles first.

#6 - Exercise!
If you are doing all the right things for your hair, but still losing your hair, you're probably not... exercising! Exercise, the most important ingredient to healthy, growing hair. Why?

  • Because stress stresses your hair, exercising helps to relieve stress!
  • When you exercise, toxins are released from your body and sweat helps to unclog your hair follicles. When your hair follicles are unclogged, it allows space for new hair to grow!
  • Exercising increases blood flow to your body, skin and scalp, bringing in adequate nutrients and oxygen to your body that would provide nourishment to your hair roots, promoting healthy hair growth.

Practice these simple steps to get your healthy hair. More healthy hair tips coming your way soon. We hope these tips help you get the hair you've always wanted!

Hair Loss Happens
Hair loss is completely normal and is a part of our hair's life cycle; however, it is deemed abnormal when... the hair follicle stops producing new hair cells, preventing new hair growth.

The hair we see on our head is made of a type of protein called keratin and is actually a string of dead keratin cells. Our hair follicles are responsible in producing new hair cells and the old cells will eventually be forced out, hence, finding a few strands of hair on your fingertips.

Each follicle has its own life cycle that can be influenced by many factors. The life cycle consists of 3 phases:
ANAGEN
Growing Phase
An active growth phase where the hair cells are rapidly growing and increasing in length.
CATAGEN
Transitional Phase
This phase last about 2 to 3 weeks where the hair stops growing.
TELOGEN
Resting Phase
The resting phase of which the hair follicle is completely at rest. Approximately 20-100 hairs are shed normally everyday. The old hair is replaced and the hair cycle starts all over again.

The hair growth cycle can be influenced by diet, lifestyle, disease, hormonal changes or many other factors. Some of these factors are reasons why many lose their hair prematurely.

There are different types of hair loss or alopecia. Telogen Effluvium, in particular, is a temporary and/or excessive hair loss condition that is caused by physical and emotional stress such as childbirth and trauma,  an inadequate diet, usage of medications, habitual and environmental factors such as smoking, exposure to the sun and overuse of styling and heating products.

Hair Loss and its Symptoms
Alopecia means baldness, happens for many reasons of which we will discover later. One of the symptoms of hair loss is losing more than 100 strands of hair per day and considered serious if you notice thinning or clumps of hair falling out when combing your hair. For people with thinner hair, a lower number of hairs lost should be considered.

Types of Hair Loss and Causes
Many studies have been conducted and suggested a variety of factors contributing to hair loss.

1. Andogenetica Alopecia (Male & Female Pattern Baldness) is the most common type of hair loss and it is due to a combination of factors such as hereditary, age and hormones.

For some men, Male Pattern Baldness (MPB) can start as early as early 20s with receding hairlines and gradual disappearance of hair from the crown (See image 1). Some women, on the other hand, experience Female Pattern Baldness (FPB) usually after menopause, approximately at age 40 and above with general thinning on the scalp, having most extensive hair loss on the crown (See image 2).

Image 1: Male Pattern Baldness Image 2: Female Pattern Baldness

Hereditary/Hormones
95% of hair loss is caused by the male sex hormone, Dihydrotestosterone (DHT). It is formed in adrenal gland, prostrate gland, testes and hair follicle. DHT is important in the early stages in life, for sexual behavior and important for protein building.

For people with genetic tendency to hair loss, DHT prevent nutrients to the hair follicle, which causes hair follicles to shrink. The shrinking of hair follicle would result in thinning hair and eventually, balding.

Many treatments are available but it may not work for some with genetic predisposition to hair loss. Hence, medical surgeries are available such as hair transplants, scalp reduction or flap surgery. However, hair transplant may cause additional hair loss as a result of "shock fallout" and it might not regrow.

2. Telogen Effluvium (TE) is the second most common type of hair loss and is most common in females. People who undergo this phase of hair loss experience overall thinning of the hair but less severe and temporal as compared to Androgenetica Alopecia. As it's temporal, the hair goes into the resting phase and falls out 2 to 3 months later, then, grow back in 6 to 9 months.

The main factor of TE is the hormonal changes in one's body. Thus, this temporal hair loss is often seen in women after childbirth and, or pregnant. Stress (also caused by hormonal changes) is also one of the factors of the mentioned temporal hair loss. Stress causes scalp tension and decreases blood circulation which deprives nutrient in the hair follicles. The bad news for people experiencing TE is that there are no treatments BUT there's not a need for treatment as hair should return after a dormant phase.
3. Anagen Effluvium caused by medical treatments like chemotherapy, to treat cancer. Hair usually stops growing and falls out in patches and eventually, total. Hair usually grows back after 6 months after treatment has stopped.
4. Traction Alopecia, just as the name suggests, it is a type of hair loss due to excessive and chronic traction, pulling, straining of hair. Hence, try to avoid braiding or weaving your hair too often as it strains the hair follicle.
5. Alopecia Areata can be defined as hair falling out in coin-sized patches. Areata can be seein in children of young adults, but hair will return within a few years in 90% of cases. The reason for the temporary baldness is unknown but it is caused by an auto-immune disease, when the immune system attacks the hair follicles.
6. Alopecia Univeralis involves rapid total baldness in the entire body, including eyebrows. It is considered the most severe type of hair loss as a result of an auto-immune disease.

Other factors:
7. Illness and diseases - some illnesses, for example, high fever, influenza, anaemia, tumour, syphilis, diabetes and thyroid gland related diseases may cause temporary hair loss.

8. Chemotherapy and medications - Some medications encourages hair fall such as anti-depressants, anti-arthritic, and even high doses of Vitamin A.

9. Inadequate nutrition - Malnutrition plays a vital role in hair loss. An inadequate protein and iron intake can cause hair to enter into the Telogen (resting) phase. Thus, fill your meals with raw vegetables, fish, fruits, beans, salads, green leafy vegetables for good health and HAIR!

Trichotillomania -
A behavioral concern
Self-Inflicted:
10. Trichotillomania (hair pulling) is a behavioral issue and should be addressed.

11. Hair Styling Treatments - Chemical treatments for bleaching, dyeing, tints, straighening, permanent waves, or relaxers can make the hair weaker. For this reason, use reputable products and visit a qualified hair stylists.

12. Birth Control Pills

Apart from a great physical appearance, our hair is also important as it speaks a whole lot about who we are. Our hair speaks volume, literally. Even the king of the jungle, the Lion, has great hair or mane (whichever you prefer to call it) and with it, oh-what-glory! Our hair tells of status, role in society and even our personality. What about your hair? What till it tell?

Hair loss can be real devastating for both men and women. People spend thousands on hair loss treatments and see slow progress or worse, no results. Preventing hair loss is perhaps not very complicated but time consuming and requires a great deal of patience. Unless you're ready to go bald, read on to understand what hair loss is all about and the main key in tackling this devastating issue, that is to go straight to the underlying root of why it's happening.

Hair Facts

An average person would have 100,000 hairs on their head and it's normal to lose 50-100 strands of hair per day. Well, not to worry, hair will grow back with the same amount lost.

Each month,
our hair will grow 1/2 to 1 inch.

As we grow older,
the hair grows slower too.

Occurs 85% to one's hair and lasts from 2-6 years, depending on genetics. During this phase, the hair is growing actively; protein and keratin are continuously made. The longer the hair is in the anagen phase, the faster and longer it will grow.
Also known as transition phase. Chemicals and structural changes are produced in the hair follicle. The hair stops growing and this phase only last 1 to 2 weeks before moving on to the next phase.
Better known as resting phase. At this phase, the 'matured' hair sits on the head for approximately 3 months and later, begins to fall out so new budding hair can grow out. We shed about 50-100 resting hairs per day. Then, the whole Anagen phase repeats again when the preceding hair strand is pushed out by the new hair. As we age, less sebum are produced, so the new hair becomes finer. If the hair follicle refuses to put out more hair, balding then occurs. A resting hair is normally dry, hard and has white material at the roof of the hair.
